The sustainable management of the coastal erosion problem needs information over a wide range of spatial scales (centimeters to kilometers) and time periods (seconds to years) to characterize the coastal dynamics. Recently, the analyses of coastal environments using video images have proven to be an efficient methodology (autonomous and low cost), offering clear advantages over traditional methods (topography and bathymetry).

The application of video measurement methods to littoral areas is based on photogrammetric techniques, converting an oblique image to a metric and plane image. This application has been developed by the Coastal Imaging Lab (CIL) at Oregon State University and has been named Argus.

The “KOSTASystem” project comes as a result of a collaboration between AZTI and LaSAGeC (Anglet, Université de Pau et Pays de l’Adour, France). The two institutes, one in the Basque Country and the other in Aquitaine, agreed on the necessity of dealing with the problem of littoral management in a coordinated way, because of the interdependency of the two frontier coastal systems. Out of the technological developments comes the KOSTASystem, a littoral monitoring system.

  • KOSTASystem facilitates the acquisition of coastal process information from images.

The software Kosta System is made up of 3 modules:

    • Kosta Acquisition: Acquisition and management of the video data base.
    • Kosta Calibration: Lens geometric distortion correction and geo-referentiation of the image.
    • Kosta Imaging: Management of the images in order to obtain coastal processes information.

  • This system aims to provide management personnel a tool to make high resolution monitoring easier (spatial and temporal monitoring), and facilitate, in a relatively simple and cost effective way, coastal monitoring.

The applications of this system are:

    • Shoreline monitoring
    • Intertidal topography, surface and volume variation
    • Beach users density
    • Wave break zone, bar and rip currents detection

  • Since 2006, different KostaSystem stations have been installed and put into operation:

    • 1 in La Arena
    • 1 in Getxo
    • 1 in Sopela
    • 1 in Bakio
    • 1 in Mundaka
    • 1 in Zarautz
